Un ricordo personale di Mario Monicelli da parte di Franco Giubliei, giornalista de La stampa e coautore del libro “Capelli lunghi – l’unico film mai realizzato del maestro della commedia all’italiana”

La cosa che più mi ha colpito di Mario Monicelli, quel giorno che io e Massimo Bonfatti andammo a intervistarlo nel piccolo appartamento di via dei Serpenti, nel cuore del rione Monti a Roma, è stata la sua scelta di vivere da solo: aveva già 93 anni, ci vedeva poco e raccontava che le sue condizioni erano peggiorate da quando era stato investito da un’auto, anni addietro. Eppure ci teneva a conservare libertà e autonomia, diceva che se fosse andato ad abitare dai parenti lo avrebbero colmato di troppe attenzioni, lo avrebbero assistito al punto che in breve tempo avrebbe smesso di muoversi per sempre, perché ci sarebbe stata gente che avrebbe fatto le cose al posto suo. Così invece era obbligato a uscire, si faceva le scale a piedi dato che il palazzo non aveva ascensore, sbrigava da solo le faccende quotidiane. Lo faceva per non cominciare a morire già da vivo. Ripensando a quel racconto capisco ancora meglio, anche se i motivi di un suicidio sono chiari fino in fondo solo alla persona che lo compie e forse neanche a lui, come Monicelli abbia deciso di fare il gran salto finché aveva gambe abbastanza salde da permetterglielo: probabilmente non voleva passare il tempo che gli restava fra cure mediche, farmaci, tubi, interventi, chemio, magari immobilizzato in un letto, costretto a farsi seguire per ogni minima esigenza. Una scelta di grande dignità, come dignitoso è stato in vita Monicelli. Grazie per tutte le risate amare che ci hai regalato, caro Mario.

Mario Monicelli citato nel discorso di Roberto Saviano al Palasharp di sabato 5 febbraio 2011 in occasione della manifestazione di Libertà e Giustizia. Potete leggerne la sintesi pubblicata su La Repubblica del 5/2/2011. E’ un discorso molto saggio e ci fa piacere constatare che altri, molto più qualificati di noi, vedono in Mario una una figura politica (nel senso di esempio civile e intellettuale) di massima grandezza.

il vecchio leone, lucido di mente come lo specchio di un bordello ma minato ormai nel fisico consumato, ha deciso di imitare uno dei suoi personaggi, brancaleone da norcia, che invita e sfida senza timore la morte… ma mentre il personaggio interpretato da gassman e’ tanto simpatico quanto sbruffone, monicelli ha dimostrato fino alla fine di amare la vita e la dignita’ che le compete, tanto da non temerne davvero la naturale conclusione e decidere lui quando andarsene… e l’ha fatto gettandosi dalla finestra del quinto piano dell’ospedale, uscendo dallo stesso con le sue gambe, in un certo senso, e smentendo dunque ogni pronostico dei medici… aveva 95 anni ed era malato di cancro.
non e’ retorica: per fortuna, restera’ davvero sempre con noi… come potrebbe essere diversamente…?

oggi sono andato a trovare monicelli alla casa del cinema.
curiosamente qualche settimana il direttore artistico aveva spiegato che quando la casa del cinema era stata progettata avevano considerato le misure del parterre in funzione di un eventuale utilizzo come camera ardente.
non pensavo che potessoro utilizzarla davvero. la morte è veramente fonte sublime di comicità.

Quando l’ho saputo, l’altro giorno, ho ricevuto davvero un
brutto colpo.
Non immaginavo di essere così legato (coì tanto) a
Monicelli, e sono arrivato a piangere. Questo mi capita solo
con amici e parenti. L’altra volta che mi è successo con
un estraneo, è stato quando se n’è andato Magnus.
Evidentemente cìè un filo invisibile che ci lega a
questi personaggi, e quando vengono a mancare ci sentiamo
all’improvviso sguarniti, nudi, soli.
Sì, “soli”. E’ la parola che sto sentendo di più in
questo caso, ed evidentemente è così per tutti, non solo
per me.
Sapendo che a Monicelli non sono mai piaciute le piangerie e

Da un lato non posso non incazzarmi per questo
suo ultimo exploit, perché uno così io avrei voluto
averlo in circolazione per altri 95 anni.
Dall’altro posso solo dire che all’età che aveva, e
dopo la vita che ha fatto, la sua è stata probabilmente
la fine più gloriosa di cui ho mai sentito.
‘Ma per certo io credo che sarà sempre meglio di
questa vita che ci toccò in sorte’, come diceva

Lo immaginavo sempre scalzo, dopo quella caricatura. L’ho immaginato scalzo anche mentre volava.

Non ho conosciuto purtroppo bene il personaggio come avrei voluto quando era in vita, se non negli ultimi anni, e non attraverso il suo lavoro, bensì tramite le sue apparizioni, interviste, commenti, che ho trovato sinceri, cinici, onesti e amabili, in sintonia con il mio grande vecchio interiore che è forse una delle mie parti migliori a cui da tempo non do spazio. Se si può dire di aver apprezzato la morte di qualcuno, io l’ho fatto. Non nella morte in sè ovviamente, ma nello spirito vitale del gesto, che non reputo un gesto estremo ma semplicemente coraggioso, e coerente forse più di quanto molti permettano a sè stessi in questi anni di compromessi. Da questo punto almeno per me partirà la voglia di riscoprirlo e dargli nuova vita attraverso la visione delle sue opere, dato che a questo punto, paradossalmente, posso solo scoprire qualcosa in più della sua vita, a partire dalla sua morte.
